Privacy Policy
Thank you for using Calnote. We designed this app around a simple principle: collect as little as possible and process as much as possible on your device. Please read this policy carefully before use. By continuing to use Calnote, you acknowledge and agree to what is described here.
1. Who we are
Calnote is a calendar-centered journal / note app. Through the monthly calendar you can view, write, search and export your personal journal entries. If you have any questions about this policy or about how personal information is handled, contact us at extrastu@duck.com.
2. What information we collect
2.1 Journal content you create
When you write in the app, the content you type is stored locally on your device: the entry body, the date key (derived from your device calendar and time zone), creation and update timestamps, and record identifiers. These are your personal creations and life records, used solely to provide journal storage, display, search, sync and export. We never use them for advertising, profiling, or sale to third parties.
2.2 App preferences (stored on this device only)
To remember your habits, the app stores preferences on-device (UserDefaults), such as appearance mode (system / light / dark), font size, first day of the week, the page shown on launch, whether App Lock is enabled (on-device Face ID / Touch ID only, no custom passcode), whether iCloud sync is desired, and whether first-run tips have been shown. These preferences are not synced to iCloud by default and apply to the current device only.
2.3 What we do not collect
In the current version, Calnote does not:
- require an account, or ask for your name, phone number or email (except when you voluntarily email us via "Contact the developer");
- collect precise location;
- access contacts, camera, microphone or photo library (unless a future feature explicitly requests authorization);
- collect, store or upload Face ID / Touch ID biometric templates (App Lock only receives a success/failure result from the system's LocalAuthentication);
- include third-party advertising SDKs, analytics SDKs or cross-app tracking;
- upload your journal content to any developer-owned server.
3. How information is stored and synced
3.1 Local storage
Journal data is stored on your device using the system's SwiftData, in an App Group shared container so the main app, home screen widgets, lock screen controls, Shortcuts and the macOS menu-bar quick entry all read and write the same local journal. You can use Calnote on-device even without signing in to iCloud.
3.2 iCloud sync (optional)
If you enable iCloud sync in Settings and your device is signed in to a working iCloud account, journal data may be synced between devices under your Apple ID via the Apple CloudKit private database. Notes:
- Sync is handled by Apple's iCloud / CloudKit infrastructure and is governed by Apple's privacy policy and terms.
- After changing the "iCloud sync" preference, a restart of the app is normally required for the storage mode to switch.
- After turning sync off, records remain on the device; whether a cloud copy persists depends on Apple iCloud and your account settings.
- The developer cannot browse your private cloud journal the way one would log into a self-hosted backend.
3.3 Widgets, lock screen, Shortcuts and menu bar
Content written through home screen widgets, lock screen / Control Center controls, system Shortcuts (App Intents) or the macOS menu-bar quick entry is the same local journal data (optionally synced via iCloud). These entry points never send content to a developer-owned server.
3.4 Export
You can export entries as Markdown files and save them wherever you choose via the system share sheet or file export. Export is initiated by you; temporary files are cleaned up afterwards where possible. Third-party apps or cloud drives you share to are governed by their own privacy policies.
4. How we use information
We use the relevant information only to: display and edit entries in the monthly calendar; search and revisit history; apply your appearance, font and week-start preferences; perform iCloud sync when you enable it; export Markdown on your action; show or append entries via widgets, lock screen controls, Shortcuts and the menu bar; and improve stability or investigate issues you actively report (limited to information you provide). We never use journal content for marketing, ad targeting, or sale to third parties.
5. Sharing and disclosure
Except in the following cases, we do not share your journal content or personally identifiable information with third parties: (1) with your explicit consent, or when you actively share/export files to others or other services; (2) when required by law, judicial or administrative authorities; (3) when necessary to protect the vital legitimate interests of you, us or the public, consistent with applicable law; (4) Apple as infrastructure provider, when you enable iCloud sync and data is processed under Apple's mechanisms. We do not sell your personal information.
6. Data security
We take reasonable measures to protect data security, including: prioritizing system-level local storage and Apple's official sync capabilities; never transmitting journal content to developer-owned servers; and clearly distinguishing the actual storage mode from sync preferences in the app to avoid misleading status displays. Please note: no electronic storage or network transmission is absolutely secure. Safeguard your device unlock method and Apple ID, and keep your system and the app up to date.
7. Your rights and control
To the extent permitted by applicable law, you can:
- Access & correct — view, edit or delete any day's entry directly in the app;
- Export — obtain a copy of your content via "Export as Markdown";
- Control sync — turn iCloud sync on or off in Settings (applies after restart);
- Uninstall & erase — deleting the app removes on-device data; cloud copies, if sync was enabled, are managed through Apple iCloud / system settings;
- Contact us — send privacy-related requests to extrastu@duck.com.
We will respond to legitimate requests within a reasonable period.
8. Children's privacy
Calnote is intended for a general audience and is not designed for children. If you are a guardian and believe a minor has provided personal information to us without appropriate consent, contact us and we will assist in handling it in accordance with the law.
9. Third-party services and system permissions
The app relies mainly on Apple system capabilities (SwiftData, CloudKit, WidgetKit, App Intents, the system share sheet). Related processing is governed by the Apple Privacy Policy. External links or third-party apps you open via mail, browser or the share sheet are governed by their own privacy terms, independent of this policy.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, the "Effective date" above will be revised and, where reasonable, notice will be given through in-app links, this product page or other appropriate means. If changes materially adjust rights or obligations, we will endeavor to notify you more prominently. Continued use of Calnote constitutes acceptance of the updated policy; if you disagree, please stop using and uninstall the app.
11. Governing law and contact
The interpretation and application of this policy shall, without conflicting with mandatory law, prioritize the personal information protection laws applicable in your location. For any privacy questions or requests, contact us at the address below.
